Italian proceedings online at Portale Antenati – Read Here!!!

In December 2011 we commented in this blog that the Portale Antenati was born, a great desire for the descendants of Italians scattered around the world; in this way, online Italian acts would be available to descendants of Italians worldwide. Thanks to an agreement signed with FamilySearch in 2011, the goal of the portal is to progressively publish millions and millions of images of civil status records (part of these images are digitizations of microfilm taken by FamilySearch and part are recent digitizations). The portal asks us to voluntarily participate in the indexing project.

What will we find in portale Antenati?

In addition to access to images and indexes of civil registry books throughout Italy, the portal offers two other options:

  • collaborate as a volunteer by indexing (indexing) records
  • information on the funds (civil and military registers) held in the state archives of each province.

Recently an update of this portal was put online, which has given a lot to talk about and has not provided a good user experience.

Navigating the Portale Antenati

When entering the site http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it we find a top navigation bar that, among other options, allows us to select the language and Explore the files. By entering the Esplora gli Archivi menu, we will find two ways to search for the digitized records of each Italian state archive. The first option is through an interactive map, for this we have to know about the Italian geography, to locate the province on the map and click on the respective icon. The second option, a little further down the page, is to search for the archive of the province of our interest in the list. We can help each other using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+F, if necessary. When entering the state file of the province that interests us, we will find a series of information: We can find a state file whose documentary heritage has not yet been uploaded, in which case the buttons will be deactivated (gray color) and the message indicates that the indexing is planned. In this case, we can try to find out if the images can be consulted in FamilySearch since, as we mentioned opportunely, Antenati is a project of the Italian DGA in common with FamilySearch. On the contrary, the green indicator (COMPLETE), indicates that all digitized records are already online. By entering Cerca nei registri (Search the records), we can "dive" through the digitized funds, although in this new version of the site it can be a little more cumbersome (and that is why it has led to so many complaints from users!). The digitized funds are grouped by registration and to the left of the site we find several options to "filter" documents, that is, choose the options that best suit our search. At the top we find one of the most interesting options: if the records were or are being indexed, that is, if data was extracted from these records to make it easier to locate the games. If it was indexed, the Register button with Anagrafiche will be activated, otherwise, no. In case there is an indexing, even if it is partial, the results of the search will be modified: they continue to be grouped by records, but the Atti collegati icon will appear, which will allow us to see the data of people who were extracted, taken, from that record. We will then see the list of minutes: date, name and surname of the person whose event (birth, death, etc.) gave rise to the act. The records are ordered chronologically descending, but we can change the order in case we are interested in a record of the first months of the year. The Vedi l'atto button takes us to see the digital image of the game. In that case, we will be able to see data of related people (father, mother, spouse).

Recent news in portale Antenati

Recently, two options were incorporated (claimed by users of the old version of the portal):

  1. the thumbnail view, which allows us to visualize all the pages of the respective book and make some decisions: observe if the book has an index; if we are looking for a record of an event that occurred towards the end of the year, choose images located more at the end of the lot; etc.
You can also choose to see the thumbnails on the right (Right), below the main image (Background) or hide them (Nascondi).
  2. the possibility of copying the link of the image to be able to share it with relatives or in forums, to help us interpret a record, for example.
